Paris Ritz: Missing €750k ring found in hotel vacuum bag

The owner, a Malaysian businesswoman who was a guest at the hotel, filed a police complaint on Friday after suspecting an employee of stealing it.

Ritz security guards found the ring lying among the dust in a vacuum bag on Sunday, Le Parisien reported.

The newspaper added that the guest had travelled to London on Friday, but will now return to Paris for her ring.

The Ritz said it has offered three more nights to the guest to make up for the inconvenience, though it is understood she does not intend to take up the offer.

In a statement to Le Parisien, the hotel said: "Thanks to the meticulous work of security guards, the ring was found this morning.

"We would like to thank the staff at the Ritz Paris who mobilised for this search and who work each day with integrity and professionalism."

The businesswoman told police she left the ring on a table in her hotel room on Friday when she went shopping in the city for a few hours, and when she returned it was gone.

Police are looking after the ring until the woman can collect it.

It is not the first time that jewellery has been reported missing at the hotel.

In 2018, five armed men seized more than €4m (£3.5m) worth of merchandise from a jewellery shop inside the famous establishment.

Later that year, an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family reported the theft of hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of jewellery from her hotel room suite.

114 years later, after being open non-stop since day one, through depressions and two world wars, current Ritz owner Mohamed Al Fayed had an epiphany. I want the Ritz to remain the best hotel in the world." To do that, the Ritz would need a massive makeover. Al Fayed said to the designer, "If you mess up, I'll kill you!" It's a relief to find that designer Thierry Despont has refurbished the historic hotel while maintaining its traditional 18th-century French décor — now with a lighter, fresher feel. What You Can Expect At The Ritz Hotel Paris

The stuff of Paris legend — a staff of 600 chefs, cooks, concierges, sommeliers, voituriers (drivers), maids, room service, and laundry, all with an amazing esprit de corps makes things fit for a king. Add to that its rich history and the newest incarnation of the Ritz Hotel in Paris is, indeed, a special place.

The impression when you first enter the Ritz is like stepping into, not so much a hotel, but an aristocratic residence from a forgotten era. Don't get us wrong, we do like the newer high-end Palaces and 5-star hotels in Paris, they are serious rivals for luxury and comforts. But they cannot match the unique thing the Ritz has in abundance — the patina of history.

Most of the $450 million put into the renovation is unseen, like the new electrical, plumbing, heated floors, and other modern comforts and technology. Televisions are hidden in mirrors, electrical plugs are concealed, and touchpad controls added to allow guests to monitor the room's air conditioning and heating.

The number of rooms and suites has been reduced to 142 from 159 to allow for more storage and spacious bathrooms. The gilded-swan taps stayed, as did the peach-coloured towels and dressing gowns that César Ritz personally chose to universally flatter women's complexion..

A new, glass-covered courtyard now stretches from the Bar Vendôme, alongside restaurant l'Espadon with a fancy, retractable roof that makes it a year-round usable space. Also new is the world's first Chanel Spa, a ballroom, a 21,500-square-foot Versailles-type garden, and Salon Proust, where guests can take afternoon tea.

La Rénovation

The decision to renovate the hotel was made in 2012, when the Ritz Hotel Paris failed to meet the exacting standards to qualify for a Palace status.

"Modernized, but with discretion," is how the Ritz Hotel Paris describes their spectacular four-year, multi-million euro renovation. Much like how a person of a certain age approaches plastic surgery, the Ritz envisioned its own makeover more Jane Fonda than Renee Zellweger.

French-born designer Thierry Despont wanted to elevate the Ritz by adding more light and more flourish. He raised the ceiling in the entrance and opened the mezzanine level windows to let light pour in from the Place Vendôme. But, overall, he was adamant about keeping the changes subtle changes, to honor the history of the Ritz Hotel Paris. The changes are, in fact, quite subtle. The signature gold-and-blue palette is unchanged, but tweaks to the limestone landmark make it… "sparkle", would be the word.

Although most of the original classical and Empire furniture, period paintings, glass chandeliers, damask curtains and embroidered bedheads were kept and restored, the budget ballooned like the Sun King's Versailles. What started out as a $200 million budget soared to $450 million. 800 stonemasons, upholsterers, gilders (craftsmen who work with gold and metal leaf), and woodcarvers worked around the clock. But as in life, it didn't always go according to plan. The fire didn't help matters.

Renovation Setbacks

When the Ritz closed in August 2012, it was announced that the hotel would re-open in November 2014. Then it was set for 2015. Then it was finally set to open in March 2016. But more delays, including an unexpected electric fire that almost destroyed the roof, set back the opening by three months.

The grand reopening was on June 6, 2016, five days and 118 years after its first opening. The original renovation budget was estimated at $160 to $200 million. The final tally, according to the The Washington Post, was a dazzling $450 million. Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed, who has owned the hotel since 1979, said that the renovation was done to maintain the position of the Ritz and with hopes that it will be added to the ranks of prestigious Palace hotels in France, the highest rating a hotel can achieve.

Alas, the Ritz Hotel has so far failed to gain Palace status.

Autour du Ritz – Around the Ritz

The Ritz Health Club has been renamed the Ritz Club Paris, and is now the city's best health club, with a restored, stunning Art Deco swimming pool. The stodgy, long, mirrored shopping gallery is now more fashion-forward with a Ritz Paris concept store for travel-themed gifts.

Hemingway would be proud. The beloved Bar Hemingway has been refreshed, but not changed too much. His bronze bust is still there, along a new green carpet that looks a lot like the old one. One positive addition is that the historic bar is now filled with authentic Hemingway memorabilia, including his fishing rods and passport photos.

Le Garden. The hotel always had its own private garden space but designer Despont thought it was like an "uncut diamond". He enlisted the help of French landscape architect, Jean Mus, to turn the uncut diamond into a mini-Versailles. The garden oasis is planted with two dozen linden trees, hanging ivy and beds of white roses.

A Baker's Dozen of Iconic Suites

"Where Ritz goes, I go," the Prince of Wales (and future King Edward VII) once said. In the new Ritz there are thirteen historic suites created in honor of legendary figures, Paris landmarks, and famed hotel guests. Here is a list of the who, the what, and the periods that are honored —

SALON PROUST
One of the few completely new rooms, the Salon Proust is an elegant backdrop for a distinctly French afternoon tea, with biscuits, tarts and madeleines de Proust. Order Le The a la Francaise — The Royal Tea — and it comes with a coupe, a glass of Ritz champagne. Open 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.

L'ESPADON
The gourmet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. There's both an exterior garden space, Les Jardins de Espadon, under the atrium and in the garden, and La Table de Espadon, the stunning interior dining room. The restaurant's name, l'Espadon, or "the swordfish", was announced in 1956 and paid homage to Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.

BAR VENDOME
Don't let the word "bar" fool you. Bar Vendome is actually more Paris brasserie than a bar serving only drinks. Underneath a retractable glass canopy (it opens on sunny days) you can dine here morning, noon, and into the wee hours of the night.

The menu features all the French classics you expect — fresh oysters, steak-frites with bearnaise sauce, sole meuniere, Caesar salad, and desserts such as millefeuille, tarte au citron, chocolate eclairs. We imagine the Bar Vendome is where many well-heeled guests would rather dine than the fancy L'Espadon.

BAR HEMINGWAY
Cole Porter composed music here. F. Scott Fitzgerald had his favorite seat. It was Gary Cooper's favorite hangout whenever he was in Paris. But it was Hemingway who made it the stuff of legend. On August 25, 1944 Ernest Hemingway, surrounded by a group of Resistance fighters burst into the bar to personally liberate the Ritz. He "liberated" the bar by downing, they say, 51 dry martinis. Open from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM

RITZ BAR
You might not expect it, but the Ritz Bar is a casual place to cozy up for a glass of wine, cocktail, light lunch or appetizer. We recommend their daily specials — Thursday is duck confit day with garlic fried potatoes. We also like the salad Niçoise, smoked salmon with horseradish cream sauce, and their signature drinks.

The Beginning of a Paris Landmark

César Ritz practically invented the luxury hotel, so it's no surprise that the rooms at the hotel he founded would be drop-dead gorgeous. César was a man of humble origins who started in the hotel business at the age of fifteen. As he worked in hotels across Europe, he dreamed about building the ideal hotel where the rich and famous would feel at home.

He had to wait until he was almost fifty years old for that dream to come true. That's when he opened the Ritz Hotel Paris on Louis XIV's Place Vendôme in 1898. The Ritz was the city's first hotel to have elevators, electricity, telephone, and en-suite bathrooms. The high standards and opulent settings were revolutionary for the time. Monsieur Ritz single-handedly created the standards for what we now think of as a luxury hotel.

As soon as he opened on the Place Vendôme, César Ritz attracted an A-list of literary, artistic and aristocratic personalities staying at his hotel — all of whom left their own mythology.

The Legends of the Ritz

Coco Chanel lived at the Ritz for 34 years from 1937 to 1971.

Marcel Proust adored dining alone here and wrote in bed ensconced in the hotel. On his death bed, Proust would ask for cold beer to be sent to him from the Ritz.

The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson loved to stay at the Ritz Hotel. Their portraits now hang in the Suite Windsor.

Ernest Hemingway claimed to have liberated the Ritz (or at least its bar) in 1944.

During World War II the Nazis commandeered half of the Ritz, settled into the suites, ate all the foie gras and luxury foods, and drank all the champagne and fine wines.

Diana, Prince of Wales, had her last meal at the Ritz (a mushroom and asparagus omelette and dover sole & asparagus) and her last photo taken here on August 31, 1997.

Mohamed al-Fayed (father to Diana's last lover, Dodi Al Fayed) bought the property from the Ritz family in 1979. He immediately poured $250 million into it by building a swimming pool and spa. (Both were unheard of at the time.)

The Elusive Palace Status

With the completion of the renovation, the Ritz Hotel Paris was determined to gain Palace status in the competitive world of French luxury hotels. There are less than a dozen government-designated Palace hotels in Paris, including Le Bristol, George V, Le Meurice, Plaza Athénée, Le Royal Monceau, Shangri-La and the Mandarin Oriental (photo above).

Unlike some of the Palace hotels — the Philippe Starck modernity at the Raffles Royal Monceau and the redesigned Plaza Athénée come to mind — the Ritz feels as if it was never away. It's the tasteful details that make you feel as though you are truly living in a palace of luxury. Will the Ritz Hotel in Paris be added to that list? Well, it's been three years now, and still no sign of that coveted Palace plaque.

École Ritz Escoffier

"Good cuisine is the basis of true happiness," said Auguste Escoffier. Named for its first chef, the godfather of French cuisine, the cooking school based at the Ritz caters to both professional and amateur cooks. The school been enhanced with new demonstration kitchens.

With salons reminiscent of Louis XVI's Paris and signature moments of humble luxuries (lookin' at you gold swan taps!), a bona fide dream team of concierges, sommeliers, chefs, maids (600 strong) and a courtyard garden that epitomizes a jardin à la français, the standards are high, the experience is unparalleled and the location is in the center of the action. For a city spanning 18 arrondissements, that's a pretty big deal! All in all, this Paris in its heyday time capsule lacks nothing. It's an exquisite choice for those who love historic preservation, but don't want to sacrifice of modern conveniences that most venues with this prerequisite unfortunately do without. THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND

Practically Valedictorian for the School of Hard Knocks, César Ritz never let a single stumbling block stop him from creating one of the most globally celebrated stays in luxury in all of the world. One could say that growing up in a poverty-stricken household alongside your 12 siblings might make you a little bit of a pessimist, but it seemed to do the opposite for young César. Even when he was fired from his job at 15 years old and told he would never make it in the hospitality industry, he pulled up his bootstraps and sought out to create a singular brand rooted in warmth, generosity and the ultimate convergence of all things indulgent. Enter: The Ritz Paris.

Independent of the Ritz Carlton brand smattered across big cities du jour, this Place Vendome palace retains all the charm and conviviality of Hemingway's Paris. We have César to thank for many of the modern conveniences expected in all hotels these days. Think: telephones, bathtubs and electricity in every room. In addition to these once-upon-a-time luxuries, he peppered each room with special touches like maid + valet cords, golden keys as light switches and peach-colored bath linens (to enhance the complexion," bien sûr).

César Ritz may not have grown up attending dinner parties studded with A-listers and aristocrats, but he certainly knows what can make a person feel like royalty. It's only fitting that the Ritz has gained a sparkling reputation from its long-term romance with luminaries like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Coco Chanel, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Marcel Proust, Charlie Chaplin and of course, dear Ernest. It even courted Audrey Hepburn, appearing in films from Funny Face to Love in the Afternoon to How to Steal a Million.

And then there's the bar. Much ado has been made about this bar that Ernest Hemingway himself liberated from the Nazis at the end of WWII. Legend has it that he spared not a second before downing 51 cocktails in a row - a snippet of history we're quite happy to suspend belief for. Now called Bar Hemingway in his honor, it's cozy and study-like in ambiance, featuring memorabilia collected by cocktail barman Colin Field. There are original Ritz letterhead notes from Hemingway to his wife, framed LIFE magazine portraits, rifles, passports and so many more curiosities.

Come 1970, the hotel was sold to Mohamed al-Fayed for $30m. If his name sounds familiar, it might be because you recognize him as the owner of Harrods at the time, but it's much more likely that you're thinking of his connection to Dodi al-Fayed (his son and Princess Diana's last boyfriend). The ill-fated duo shared their last meal at the Ritz Paris, in the Imperial Suite, in fact.

Through the years, the Ritz Paris has undergone a number of top-to-bottom refurbishments. the last of which happened in 2016, when it closed its doors for 3 years to let acclaimed architect + designer Thierry Despont work his magic. $450 million later, the Ritz is as stunning as ever. Замечательно. В воспоминаниях И.А.Второва «Москва и Казань в начале XIX в.» (1842) так прямо и написано: «Остановился на Тверской улице в Цареградском трактире». То есть трактир на Тверской улице был и просуществовал до 1842 года точно, если он только был по этому адресу. Сомнения вызывает то, что дальше в истории Ритца написано, что "в XIX веке в здании трактира разместилась гостиница «Париж», которая была снесена, как и многие другие небольшие гостиницы на Тверской улице в ходе генеральной реконструкции улицы в 1930-е годы". А это уже ошибка. На Тверской улице действительно была гостиница "Париж", даже две - одна на углу с Охотным рядом в доме Комиссарова, а другая - "Малый Париж" недалеко от Тверских ворот. Но в доме номер три по Тверской улице гостиницы "Париж" не было, там была гостиница "Франция", которая располагалась в доме братьев Филипповых. Владела ей в 1901 году Орлова Леонида Герасимовна, в чем было легко убедиться, позвонив по номеру 478.

Растраивает в рекламе отеля Ритц только то, что если историки напутали с "Парижем", то и с "Царьеградским трактиром" тоже могли немножко ошибиться. Тем более, что отель "Париж", как и отель "Франция" никогда "центром московской жизни" не были.

Гостиница "Франция" не была снесена в 1930-х, а простояла до конца 1960-х.

The True Story Behind Mohamed Al Fayed's Purchase of the Ritz Paris

In 1979, the Egyptian businessman and his brothers purchased the hotel from the Ritz family.

The Ritz Paris has a storied history. The hotel, which opened in 1898, counts royalty, celebrities, and other famed personalities amongst its guests. Built by Swiss hotelier César Ritz, ownership of the iconic institution passed to his son, Charles Ritz, and then upon Charles's death in 1976, his widow, Monique Ritz, took over.

Yet, Monique's tenure as owner did not last long: In 1979, Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al Fayed purchased the hotel for $20 million. Al Fayed is perhaps best known as the father of Dodi al-Fayed, the boyfriend of Princess Diana who perished alongside the Princess of Wales in the August 1997 car crash in Paris—Diana and Dodi spent the evening in the Ritz Paris the night before their death.

"When I bought the Ritz, I had in mind to refurbish the hotel in César Ritz’s image—to do things here that would excite me and at the same time make Monsieur Ritz proud of his place if he were to see it today. It took us years, but I’m sure we brought a smile to Monsieur Ritz’s face. It was a joyful experience," Fayed told Vanity Fair.

Season five of The Crown features this sale of the Ritz Paris by Monique Ritz (portrayed by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) to Mohamad al-Fayed (portrayed by Salim Daw), with the fictional Mohamad giving a stirring speech about discrimination to Monique in an argument for why his bid for the Ritz should win.

The show depicts Mohamad making the purchase made with his brothers, Ali Al Fayed and Salah Al Fayed. In real life, the brothers all did, in fact, buy the Ritz together. In addition, a few years later, the Fayed brothers purchased luxury department store Harrods together. "We were brought up together and did everything together," Mohamad told the New York Times in 1985.

On top of the $20 million price tag, the Fayed family soon poured money into a renovation. "Mr. Fayed provided $50 million for the restoration and renovation of the Ritz," Frank Klein, who Fayed installed as managing director, explained. "The rooms were all restored to their old elegance, the bars completely refurbished—the Little Bar became the Hemingway Bar. The restaurants were given a new look, and a swimming pool, health club, and spas were created in the basement. The Ritz once again became the Ritz."

In 2012, the famed hotel shut down for renovations. "Closing down the hotel was not an easy decision to make, but it was necessary to maintain the pre-eminent position of the Ritz Paris," Fayed explained at the time. It reopened in 2016. "The new Ritz Paris remains the same as the old Ritz Paris but in a better version," he said.

In 2019, he stepped down as chairman of the hotel. "After decades of continuous involvement, Mr Al-Fayed has decided it was time to pass his duties as chairman," a statement from the Ritz Paris said, however, as of 2022, Al Fayed, now 93, still owns the Ritz.

The Ritz, a true grand dame of the Parisian hotel scene, has cocooned everyone from great writers and film stars to visiting royalty, set apart by its fastidious approach to service. This renovated legendary hotel offers unparalleled palatial opulence on Place Vendôme, with the price tag to match.

Place Vendôme has long been the glittering centre of Paris. The Ritz’s long-time resident Coco Chanel designed the first octagonal stopper for Chanel N°5 to mirror its geometry, and today it’s surrounded by Chopard, Piaget and Van Cleef & Arpels. Within five minutes’ walk you can lose yourself amid the genteel boutiques of rue Saint-Honoré, the colonnades of the Palais Royal, or the shady pathways of the Tuileries. A 10-minute walk will take you to Galeries Lafayette, the Louvre or the Musée d'Orsay.

It’s a shame not to be whisked to and from the hotel by chauffeur, but if you want to take the métro, Opéra, Madeleine and Tuileries are all within five minutes’ walk.

Style and Character

Independently owned, with no contemporary links to the Ritz-Carlton group, the Ritz has a style all its own. Despite not having yet applied to be classified as a five-star palace hotel, it’s palatial in the extreme: meticulous imitations of period furniture span from Baroque to the Belle Époque, accompanied by tasselled velvet curtains and plush carpets.

Notable following the renovation, which saw the hotel close for three years, is an ongoing dedication to tradition. The galleried shopping arcade connecting the hotel’s two wings is near indistinguishable from the 19th-century passages on which it’s modelled, Bar Hemingway retains an intimate, study-like ambiance, and the courtyard garden is the epitome of a jardin à la française.

Service and Facilities

Despite the pomp of the décor, the welcome feels genuine, many staff have worked here for years. Only the most special habituées (the clientele remains predominantly French) arrive to find their initials embroidered on their pillowcases, but the same warmth is extended to all.

The hotel’s jewel is the subterranean Ritz Club, home to the world’s first and only Chanel spa, a fitness centre and a marvellous azure-tiled pool. There’s a small Chanel beauty boutique here, too, in addition to the arcade’s 92 designer vitrines. Those in search of more gourmet indulgences can book culinary ateliers in on-site cookery school, the École Ritz Escoffier.

The rooms, decorated with Empire-style furniture and rich fabrics, might not be to everyone’s taste. Even the smallest are larger than the average one-bedroom Parisian apartment, while the suites could have been transported straight from Versailles. Technology is carefully concealed, from televisions hidden in gilt-framed mirrors to leather-bound remote controls. Coffee machines are absent to emphasise the hotel’s commitment to service, although will be spirited into rooms on request, and you’ll find a bespoke magazine-style guide to the city rather than a tablet.

The bathrooms retain plenty of original features. You can’t miss the delightfully ostentatious gold swan taps, peach bath linens (said by the hotel’s founder César Ritz to enhance the complexion) and bells to call the valet from the comfort of your bath, albeit now only for show.

Food and Drink

Belle Époque-style Bar Vendôme is the hotel’s brasserie, split between an intimate bar and terrace covered by a retractable glass canopy. The likes of caviar and oysters are followed by crowd-pleasing plats (around €65 [£58]) with a nod to seasonality: perhaps roast chicken with white asparagus paired with a silky Marsannay from Domaine Bruno Clair. Stick around for superb desserts from pastry chef François Perret.

If you really want to put on the Ritz, Nicolas Sale’s menus are served in the one-Michelin-star atrium Les Jardins de l’Espadon at lunch (two courses €95 [£84]), or his two-Michelin-star Table de l’Espadon at night (five courses for €350 [£308]). The latter is also the setting for breakfast each morning, which somewhat detracts from its cachet. Tea is served in the garden or the library-style Salon Proust, named after another illustrious guest.

Perhaps the most famous spot in the hotel is the tiny, no-reservations Bar Hemingway, where legend has it the writer liberated the hotel from the Nazis then drunk 51 cocktails in a row. It’s a story that seems barely credible after you’ve sipped just one of Colin Peter Field's martinis. The Ritz Bar, across the corridor, has been designed with a lighter Art Deco touch.

The hotel is fully accessible for guests with limited mobility and staff will go out of their way to accommodate individual needs.

Family-Friendly?

The Ritz makes a big effort to welcome children, although most activities are laid on discreetly. Swimming lessons can be booked at the Ritz Club, the École Ritz Escoffier offers lessons for little ones and Ritz teddy bears can be picked up in the hotel’s eponymous boutique in the arcade.
